“Before I paddle out, I pray. Surfing is heaven on earth, but it requires grounding and humility.”
From Lakey Peak, Sumbawa, Oney Anwar grew up among visiting surfers who inspired him to dream big. He learned to surf on his knees before standing tall, and by age 12, he traveled solo to Hawaii—an intimidating adventure that tested his courage.
In 2007, he moved to Australia’s Gold Coast under Rip Curl’s International Grommet Development Program, balancing school and competition. He has since ridden mythical waves like Seven Ghosts in Sumatra and survived near-drowning wipeouts at Hawaii’s Haliewa.
Surfing for Oney blends faith, humility, and competitive spirit. Backed by RipCurl, BGS, and Joistik Surfboards, he continues to inspire young surfers, chasing the dream of being the first Indonesian to win a WSL Championship Tour. Every wave is both training and testimony to his journey.
